Unfortunately, we did kind of get a 'new' IP from Bethesda in Prey, and it kinda bombed. Games are getting bigger and more expensive to make and it would help teams to create more believable worlds in a reasonable development time and cost with better procedural generation or artificial intelligence middleware instead of throwing more and more people on each project.Īs for what the new IP is people are likely still expecting an RPG but they could pull a Blizzard and tackle a genre they aren't known for. Expectations for ES6 are going to be pretty lofty and gives Bethesda(and industry technology) time to meet those expectations. Elder Scrolls Online has turned itself around and Skyrim is still as popular as ever. Honestly I think new IP from Bethesda is a good idea. Bethesda is still a pretty small studio by modern standards so being stuck doing two franchises for so long like a big, entrenched studio is actually kind of odd.

The actual hangup, again according to Howard, is that the Bethesda Softworks staff is just sick of only ever working on two game series and wanted to create a new I.P., so ES6 is on hold until they finish that game. Nah, Todd Howard has already gone on record saying the voiced protag in Fallout 4 was a mistake. Even if they only do human/elf/orc/khajiit/argonian, how will they be able to afford 10 voice actors with the sheer volume of dialogue required?!

Right now they are 100% hung up on the problem that the protagonist has to be voice acted like Fallout 4, except players will expect to be able to be one of ten races, male or female, and many races are already established to have very different kinds of voices and manner of speaking/dialect. I love Skyrim but they need to make/release Elder Scrolls VII already.
